Updated Age Group Cutoffs Starting Fall 2025:
We are slightly modifying the age group cutoffs next season to better align with school year age groups while still providing flexibility to stay within your calendar year age group if you so choose. A complete summary of the new age groups can be found below, and if you have any questions, please reach out.
Mini-Kickers (U4) - 9/1/2021-12/31/2022
This serves as our introduction to organized soccer. Players aren’t on teams and play once a week on Saturday mornings with the sessions prioritizing fun and games in a soccer atmosphere.
Mighty Kickers (U5) - 9/1/2020-8/31/2021
Geared towards pre-schoolers, this is our first introduction to “teams”. Game play is very informal with training focused on striking, dribbling and turning. Younger players who have outgrown Mini-Kickers may request to join the Mighty Kickers age group through the Rec Director with an endorsement from the U4 lead trainer.
Mega Kickers (U6) - 9/1/2019-12/31/2020
Geared towards kindergartners, this is slightly more advanced than Mighty Kickers, but structured the same way. Older pre-schoolers may play in this division as well, and players outside the date range may request to play in this group through the Rec Director.
Mites (U7/8) - 9/1/2017-12/31/2019
Geared towards 1st and 2nd graders, teams play two simultaneous games of 4v4 without goalies. We do not keep score at this age. Older kindergartners may also play in this division, and players outside the date range may request to play in this group through the Rec Director.
Small Sided 7v7 (U9/10) - 9/1/2015-12/31/2017
Geared towards 3rd and 4th graders, this is the first exposure to goalies, referees, and offsides. Older 2nd graders may also play in this division, and players outside the date range may request to play in this group through the Rec Director.
Small Sided 9v9 (U11/12) - 9/1/2013-12/31/2015
Geared towards 5th and 6th graders, this age group removes the "build-out line" and adds in punting. Older 4th graders may also play in this division, and players outside the date range may request to play in this group through the Rec Director.
Boys 11v11 Transitional Division (U13/14/15) - 9/1/2010-12/31/2013
Geared towards 7th, 8th and 9th graders, this age group serves as our introduction to 11v11 soccer (full field, size 5 ball, headers). Teams in this age group still play in house at either Patriot Park or Lake Braddock. Older 6th graders may also play in this division, and players outside the date range may request to play in this group through the Rec Director.
Boys Junior Varsity (NCSL Rec U16) - 1/1/2010-12/31/2011
The NCSL will not switch to school year cutoffs until next year, so BAC’s "Junior Varsity" rec program will be for 2010 and 2011 birth year players. The JV division participates in the NCSL Rec League and will need to travel locally for half of their games. Following the switch in age group cutoff dates in the summer of 2026, this will ultimately change to target 9th and 10th graders.
Boys Varsity (NCSL Rec U19) - 1/1/2007-12/31/2009
The NCSL will not switch to school year cutoffs until next year, so BAC’s “Varsity" rec program will be for 2007, 2008 and 2009 birth year players. The Varsity division participates in the NCSL Rec League and will need to travel locally for half of their games. Following the switch in age group cutoff dates in the summer of 2026, this will ultimately change to target 11th and 12th graders, however stronger 9th and 10th graders who want to compete at this level may request to do so through the Rec Director.
Girls NOVAC League (U13-U19) - 1/1/2007-12/31/2013
BAC’s U13+ girls play in the NOVAC league, a joint venture featuring teams from BAC, BRYC, VYS (Vienna) and Alexandria. Within the league, teams are broken up into U14 (Grades 6,7&8), U16 (Grades 9&10) and U19 (Grades 11&12) teams. Teams will play approximately half of their games away which will require some local travel.
Concussion Education Requirements For Coaches, Parents and Players
Burke Athletic Club is committed to educating its coaches, volunteers, parents and players on the nature and risk of concussions, criteria for removal and return to play and risks of not reporting the injury and continuing to play. BAC has adopted the following concussion education requirements for all its coaches, volunteers, parents and players.
COACHES & VOLUNTEERS: Every coach and volunteer will complete the CDC Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports online training. Upon completion, the certificate will be submitted to the club.
PARENTS & PLAYERS: The club will provide each parent and player a Parent & Athlete Concussion Information Sheet. Parents and players will be required to sign the second page, acknowledging receipt of such information. These forms will be submitted to the club.
